Lawrenceburg Tennessee : My Hometown

Lawrenceburg Tennessee is a modest, quite little southern town located about 82 miles southwest of Nashville, Tennessee. With a population of close to 14,000 people, Lawrenceburg isn’t a huge community but it’s still a little more than just a dot on the map.

To the north of Lawrenceburg Tennessee sits The Old Order Amish community. The Amish migrated to the area around 1944 and their community is still in existence today. The horse-drawn carriages they use to get back and forth are a common sight thought-out the city on any given day. The Amish have also established a small trade center north of Lawrenceburg TN where they offer for sale many different goods and services. This is a favorite tourist stop for many of our out of town visitors.

Lawrenceburg is the birthplace of Southern Gospel music and was the hometown of James Vaughan, the father of Southern Gospel! The famous Vaughan School of Music was established in Lawrenceburg, and the Vaughan Museum is a popular attraction on the Square.

There have been many well known public figures who were born or lived in Lawrenceburg Tennessee. One of the better known is in all likelihood the great frontiersman Davy Crockett. For a time he called Lawrenceburg, TN his home. Many landmarks and businesses now include Crockett in their names. David Crockett State Park and the David Crockett Monument situated on the city square are two well known spots that pay homage to the legendary outdoors man.

More recently, Fred Thompson, a 2008 presidential nominee, actor, and lawyer was raised in Lawrenceburg Tennessee for most of his life. He attended public school and graduated from the Lawrence County High School. Other noteworthy people born or raised in Lawrenceburg, TN include David Weathers, currently a pitcher for the Cincinnati Reds major league baseball team, and Michael Jeter, a Tony award winning actor with many Broadway, tv, and movie credits to his name.

Jammed with old-time malls and many specialized shops, the historic downtown square in Lawrenceburg Tennessee still has that old-time fill but with modern day convenience. Ledbetter's Drugstore still has the look and feel of an old time apothecary. You can even slide up to their lunch counter for a snack or a couple a scoops of ice cream if you like.
